Edward “Ed” James Masters, 86, of Fayetteville, PA passed away on Tuesday morning, October 29, 2024 at the Menno Haven Brookview Health Care Center. Born May 24, 1938 in St. Augustine, Florida; he was the son of the late Stacy R. Masters and Mary E. Garrett Masters. His beloved wife, Iris Masters, preceded him in death on December 3, 2022. He is survived by daughters: Kim Radha (Harish Radha) and Beth Marosy (Mike Marosy) and grandchildren Alex Radha, Emily Radha, Madison Marosy and Benjamin Marosy.
Ed was a polio survivor that gave him a keen sense of determination. He could take any electrical gadget (toasters, radios, alarm clocks) apart and put it back together, many times fixing it or making it better in the process. He was in junior high school when his family moved from St. Augustine, Florida to Brooklyn, New York. Ed was a member of the Lenox Road Baptist Church with his family. This is where he met Iris. They were married there in 1964.
Ed also loved tinkering with cars. He had a 57 Chevy Convertible that he rigged up with a speaker system with a microphone and played many pranks. He and his friends made the first ever ‘boom box’ using an old car battery, and built a wooden box for it that also opened to contain a speaker. Ed put it on wheels so he could take it anywhere, including the beach at Coney Island. Ed earned a degree in electrical engineering from the RCA Technical Institute while working for the Brooklyn Navy yard during the day. After the announcement that the Navy yard was closing, he moved the family to Annapolis in 1966 to work in the Annapolis Navy Yard, where Kim was born later in 1966. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Edgewater outside of Annapolis for 31 years; he ran the weekly sermon tape ministry and the church sound system on Sunday mornings. In 1970, they moved to Kettering MD, where Beth was born. After working for the Department of the Navy for 37 years, Edward retired, and they moved to Fayetteville, PA.
He enjoyed being up to date on current events and reading the newspaper. He dedicated a great deal of time writing many letters to local, state, and federal politicians advocating for a more advantageous medical tax deduction. Ed volunteered his time doing taxes for the local AARP, taking the tax preparer test every year so that he could do so. He also loved to fly kites. For his 75th birthday, he brought out his ‘magic’ bag of kites that had more than enough kites and strings for everyone to fly.
