Edwin Miller

Edwin W. “Ed” Miller, 93, of Chambersburg and formerly of Waynesboro, passed away Thursday morning, May 19, 2011 in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital. Born January 21, 1918 in Lakeland, FL, he was a son of the late Edward and Lucille Warren Miller. Ed graduated from high school in Lakeland and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Florida Southern University. He served several churches in Florida prior to entering the US Army in 1943. Ed served as an army chaplain during WWII and was at the Battle of the Bulge serving with the 82nd Airborne. Upon his discharge from the military he received a Master’s degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA and went on to serve at churches in California. Ed was called back to military service in 1951 and following his discharge in 1955 received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from McCormick Seminary in Chicago, IL. He then served churches in Chicago and Detroit prior to moving to Franklin County where he served for 21 years as Chaplain at the former Samuel G. Dixon State Hospital (now South Mountain Restoration Center) retiring in January of 1981. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Chambersburg and Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW. Ed was an avid reader and enjoyed working the New York Times crossword puzzle.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Maxey Miller, whom he married May 31, 1952; two sons, David W. Miller of Monroeville, PA and Paul E. Miller and wife Adriann of Alpharetta, GA; and three grandchildren, Mary Miller of Monroeville, and Grayson and Abigail Miller, both of Alpharetta. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, May 23, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Charles Hill and Edward Dyche will officiate. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 AM Monday at the funeral home.
