Elizabeth D. “Betty” Houser, age 94, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at Columbia Cottage in Palmyra, PA on Sunday, November 25, 2018. Born January 24, 1924, in Chambersburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Leslie M. and Esther McKenzie Deardorff.
A 1941 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Betty Houser went on to study and graduate from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA as a registered nurse. She also attended Marietta College in Marietta, OH. Betty served honorably during WWII in the United States Army Nurse Corps. She was a member of Zion Reformed Church in Chambersburg, where she had served as a Deacon. After the death of her husband, Robert, Betty resumed her career as an R.N. at ManorCare Health Services for 21 years, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed reading and church activities. She was an eloquent writer, who often shared inspiring Bible verses, as well as words of encouragement with her children and grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed by her family.
Surviving are two sons, Edward K. Houser (wife Cheryl) of Palmyra, PA and Kirk D. Houser (wife Teresa) of Southport, NC; three grandchildren, Shawn Houser-Fedor (husband Scott) of Palmyra, PA, Benjamin Houser (wife Christina) of Burlington, CT, and Christopher Houser (wife Lauren) of Hummelstown, PA; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Houser in 1976 and her sister, Evelyn D. Zullinger.
A private family graveside service will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018, at 11 AM in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA, with Pastor Michael Cromer officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her name to Zion Reformed Church, 259 S. Main St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
