Ellis Shaffer

Ellis “Fred” Shaffer, 81, of Marion, PA, died and went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 11, 2013 at his residence. Born February 11, 1932 in Bakerton, PA, he was a son of the late Ellis S. and Margaret Smith Shaffer. Fred served in Germany with the US Army from January of 1953 until being discharged on January 26, 1955. Early in his life he worked for three years as a coalminer. He later retired from Mack Truck after 29 ½ years of employment. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Marion First United Methodist Church, and also held membership in Harry D. Zeigler Post 6319 VFW, and Frank L. Carbaugh Post 373, both in Greencastle. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bowling, and shooting darts. As a young man in Bakerton he coached Little League baseball for two years and then later coached both his son and grandson when they played in Marion.

He is survived by his loving wife, Leona Walters Shaffer, whom he married July 13, 1957; his daughter, Debra Walck and husband Lester of Chambersburg; his son, Frederick Shaffer of Marion; and his grandchildren, Matt Ambrose and Heather Kundus and husband John, all of Chambersburg. He is also survived by numerous brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Jake; and two sisters, Hannah and Mable.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 15, 2013 at the Marion First United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Renner officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
