Elva Dilling

Elva Mae Brechbill Dilling, 87, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Thursday morning, December 22, 2011 at home. Born October 12, 1924 in St. Thomas, she was a daughter of the late David H. and Laura May Rotz Brechbill. Mrs. Dilling was a 1942 graduate of the former St. Thomas High School and went on to attend the York Business College. A financial secretary most of her life, she was first employed by the H.J. Heinz Company and then later at St. John’s United Church of Christ and Franklin and Marshall College. She was last employed at Wilson College. Mrs. Dilling was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for ten years and sang with the church choir. She also volunteered with the church’s clothing clinic and was a member of the St. John’s Women’s Ministry. Her hobbies included working puzzles, bird watching, and sewing. She and her husband volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels in Chambersburg.

She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Dilling, whom she married June 15, 1946; three children, Linda Zeger and husband Marvin of Chambersburg, Kenneth Dilling and wife Deborah of Chambersburg; and Barbara Gooch and husband John of Madison, AL; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Julia Wallsten of Chambersburg and Doris Pittman of St. Thomas; and a brother, Nelson Brechbill and wife Joann of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David H. Brechbill, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Monday, December 26, 2011 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Mark Ruzicka will officiate. Private interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Monday at the church.
