Elva G. Stambaugh, 96, a resident of the Shook Home and formerly of North Franklin Street in Chambersburg, passed away Sunday morning, January 15, 2017 at the nursing home. Born March 12, 1920, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late David W. and Carrie Grace Rife Kunkle. Mrs. Stambaugh was a 1938 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. Early in her life she was employed as a seamstress at the former Stanley Company; and then went on to work at the former H.J. Heinz Company and later as a tailor at J.C. Penney’s. She was last employed as a Teacher’s Aide with the Chambersburg Area School District for fifteen years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martha Custis Chapter #342 Order of Eastern Star, and AARP Chapter #2287, all in Chambersburg. At one time she was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Cumberland Valley Hose Company. She enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, and cooking and baking for her family. Her legacy as a Master Quilter lives on in her three daughters. Her husband, Melvin F. Stambaugh, whom she married August 29, 1941, preceded her in death on August 24, 1989.
She is survived by three daughters, Anne Owens (wife of the late James E., Jr.) of Euless, TX, Josephine M. Bookwalter and husband Robert of Dover, PA, and Kathryn H. Wolff (wife of the late Melvin) of Chambersburg, PA; six grandchildren, Tim, Scott, Alex, Cheri-Anne, Craig, and Laura; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday, January 19, 2017 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Private interment will follow at Norland Cemetery. Members of the Martha Custis Chapter #342 Order of Eastern Star will conduct an Eastern Star service at 10:45 AM Thursday at the funeral home and the family will then receive friends from 11:00 AM until services begin at Noon.
