Eric J. Payne, 87, of Marion, PA, passed away Wednesday evening, May 30, 2018, at his home. Born May 27, 1931, in Shropshire County, Wellington, United Kingdom, he was a son of the late Thomas and Violet Brooks Payne.
Eric grew up in the United Kingdom, coming to the United States when he was 18 years old. He moved to his current residence in 1955. In his early life he was employed at the Shoe Factory in Schuylkill County, PA before entering the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving during the Korean War. Following his military service he worked at Ideal Cleaners and Pet Ritz, both in Chambersburg. He then was employed at Sunnyway Foods, Inc., in Greencastle, where he worked for 22 years, retiring in 1996. Following his retirement he worked part-time at OSI and Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home. Eric was a member of Antrim Brethren in Christ Church. He enjoyed gardening, traveling with his wife to England to visit family, reading, photography, and WWII documentaries on the History Channel. Eric will be lovingly remembered by many for his outgoing personality and for making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise E. Stouffer Payne, whom he married on September 10, 1954; three children, Linwood E. Payne (Karen), of Chambersburg, Stuart W. Payne, (Barb), of Fayetteville, and Cynthia L. Campbell (John, Sr.), of Oakdale; 11 grandchildren, Melinda (Ken), Ryan (Sara), Meredith, Shauna (Seth), Melody, Miranda, Josh, Hannah, Samantha, John, Jr., and Eric; one great-grandson, Aaron; one great-granddaughter, Abi, and 5 step-great grandchildren; one step-great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews, in the U.S. and the U.K. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, June 4, 2018, at Antrim Brethren in Christ Church, 24 Kauffman Rd. East, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Casey Hurst will officiate. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 PM Sunday and from 9:00-10:00 AM Monday at the church.
