Erma Glass

December 2, 1926 — August 21, 2013

Erma Mae Glass, 86, of Orrtanna, PA, and formerly of Downingtown, PA, entered into God's eternal care on August 21, 2013, after a brief illness at the Chambersburg Hospital. Erma was born on December 2, 1926, in Altoona, PA, the only daughter of the late Harry and Viola (Nearhoof) Deitz. For 50 years she was the loving and caring wife of the late Charles E. Glass, who passed away in 1998. She was also predeceased by five brothers Carl, Meryl, Russell, John, and Harry Deitz, Jr.

A 1945 graduate of Altoona High School, she retired from the Downingtown National Bank. She was a member of Downingtown United Methodist Church, and a volunteer at the Lord's Pantry for a number of years. Erma's life achievement was raising her family who loved her with all of their hearts.

She is survived by her four children Gregory C. Glass (Cynthia) of Pittsburgh, PA; Marlene L. Hammer of Washington, DC; Joyce Y. Wright (Gerry) of Louisville, KY; Douglas E. Glass (Lynda) of Orrtanna, PA; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother Robert Deitz (Ardith) of Chelmsford, MA; and, a number of nieces and nephews. Erma enjoyed life and was known for her sense of humor. Her deep appreciation for music helped cultivate her children's musical interests. An avid reader, she also loved word and jigsaw puzzles, needlework and crafts. She had an intense love of animals and was rarely without a family dog. Her special joy was watching her grandchildren grow and mature into loving adults and parents.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 11 AM at the Downingtown United Methodist Church, 751 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335, where Pastor William Kauffman will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Philadelphia Memorial Park. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. Contributions in Erma's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 101, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
