Esther S. McBride, 97, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday morning, March 5, 2018 at The Inn at Luther Ridge. Born March 26, 1920 in Maytown, Lancaster County, PA, she was a daughter of the late Charles A. and Rosa Kraut Straley. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Thiel College and a Master’s Degree from Columbia University. From 1940 – 1960, Mrs. McBride was employed as a History and English teacher at the Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lancaster County and then from 1963 – 1966 as an Assistant Professor of English at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA. She was then employed as an Education Program Specialist at the US Office of Education in Washington, DC from 1969 until retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, the Chambersburg Mall Walkers Club, and the Red Hat Society, all in Chambersburg.
She is survived by six step-children, Marilyn Vargo of Cleveland, OH, Pamela Ramirez of Oakland, CA, Leland McBride of Columbus, OH, Dennis McBride of Wake Forest, NC, Steven McBride of Columbus, OH, and Linda McBride of Denver, CO; twelve step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Swick in 1985; her second husband Floyd E. McBride in 2008; two brothers; and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 10, 2018 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 2695 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Christopher Frye will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Noon on Monday at Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, McConnellstown, PA.
