Eugene R. Baker, 89, of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Menno Haven. Born December 13, 1927 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Harry and Mabel Rotz Baker. His beloved wife of 68 years, Mabel Pollard Baker, preceded him in death on March 8, 2017. Eugene is survived by his son, James W. Baker and wife Cindy of Chambersburg.
He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church where he taught Sunday School for 32 years. He was a former member of Central Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1945 following his high school graduation and served honorably with the 1st Infantry Division in Germany in 1946. After his discharge from the Army he earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Shippensburg State College and a master’s degree from Western Maryland College in 1950. He began his teaching career in a one room school in Antrim Township and served as teacher, principal and director of Elementary Education in the Greencastle-Antrim School district for 38 years until his retirement in 1988. Eugene was active in the Meals on Wheels program of Chambersburg where he served as a board member and volunteer driver. Hobby farming, hunting, fishing and traveling were his favorite activities.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Paul B. Baker and Rev. Ronald Cook will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
