Everett Showalter

Everett M. Showalter, 88 of Chambersburg, PA, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday evening July 16, 2013 from his home. Born November 2, 1924 in Timberville, VA, he was the son of the late Baylor W. and Mary Elizabeth Reid Showalter. A graduate of Broadway (VA) High School, he served in the US Navy aboard submarines in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII. He retired in May of 1976 from DESCOM at Letterkenny Army Depot. He attended First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg for many years, where he also taught Sunday school. He was a member of the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, and a life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW. Mr. Showatler was a Cribbage and Sudoku player and an avid reader of history and religious books. He especially enjoyed reading his Bible and military history. His passion in life was service and he spent most of his time while residing at Penn Hall volunteering with chapel services and assisting people to church as well as volunteering his time wherever necessary.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Geraldine M. Hoerner Showalter, whom he married June 17, 1950; two sons, Everette Showalter, Jr. and wife Patricia of Hagerstown, MD, and David E. Showalter and wife Julie of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Edward and wife Bonnie and Paul and wife Anna, all of Timberville, VA, and Weldon of Charlottesville, VA; and two sisters, Margarite of Elizabethtown and Louise and husband Gene of Mathias, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton and Stanley Showalter.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Penn Hall Chapel (located in the Manor Building at Penn Hall) 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA with Chaplain Brenda Doyle officiating. Private interment at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will follow at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:00 AM Saturday at the Chapel.
It was Mr. Showalter’s request that memorial contributions be made to the Menno Haven/Penn Hall Benevolent Fund, 2011 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
