Floyd Sollenberger

May 18, 1918 — May 2, 2013

Floyd W. Sollenberger of Chambersburg, PA passed away at Quincy Village on May 2, 2013. He was born May 18, 1918 in Hamilton Township to the late Albert and Hazel Hartman Sollenberger. He attended Mary B. Sharpe Elementary School and graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1938.

In 1941, he married his sweetheart, Mary Josephine Wampler, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Floyd first worked at Shartle’s Machine Shop until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He was assigned to the 643rd Tank Destroyer Battalion and worked as a mechanic and dispatcher. In 1944 his battalion was deployed to Cherbourg, France and eventually engaged in combat in Germany. When asked how he felt about his time in the service, he replied, “You just do what you need to do.” Floyd’s wartime experiences, particularly those in Germany, were the subject of one of the Public Opinion articles on local W.W. II veterans. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After leaving the service, Floyd returned to Shartle’s, where he earned the nickname “Lightning” because he worked so meticulously and slowly. He worked there until 1953. At various times, he worked at Landis Tool Co., Davis Machine Shop, Hanover Tool Co., H.J. Heinz Co., where he was called “Solly,” Chambersburg Hospital and Wilson College. In later life, he enjoyed doing yard work for residents in the north end of Chambersburg.

Floyd was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion as well as a lifelong member of St. John’s U.C.C. At St. John’s, he participated in many activities, among them serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School and helping with the men’s “kitchen crew.” Most recently, he could be seen, often alone, raking leaves, removing unwanted grass and doing whatever it took to make the church grounds neat and attractive. He was an avid coin and stamp collector.

In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth(Shaffer) and Dorothy(Wile). He is survived by his daughters, Susanne Flickinger and Jane Martin and her husband, Terry; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandsons; a brother, H. Eugene; two nephews and three nieces.

A funeral service will be held at St. John’s U.C.C., 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 10:00 am with Pastor Mark Ruzicka officiating. The family will receive friends at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA on Friday, May 10, 2013 from 7-9pm and on Saturday, May 11 one hour prior to the service at the church.
