Frances Louise “Fran” Herrity, Ph.D., age 78, of Fayetteville, PA passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born in Washington, DC on May 14, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Harry Edward Sparshott, Sr. and Frances Louise Kellum Sparshott.
Ms. Herrity earned her Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate degrees from George Mason University, where she served as Associate Dean of Admissions for 18 years, until her retirement. Prior to working at George Mason, she worked for the House of Representatives in Administration for 30 years. Fran was a member of St. John’s UCC, where she served in the Church Consistory, as a Bell Ringer, on the Personnel Committee, and the Summer Singers. Charitable with her time, Fran volunteered at the Grove Library, Coyle Free Library, the Chambersburg Hospital in Pastoral Care, and the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. She enjoyed horses and was a member of the Toastmasters and Bull Run Hunt Club.
Surviving are her siblings, Patricia A. Blackman (husband Richard) of DE and Harry Edward Sparshott (wife Joanne) of NC; two nieces, Karen Vassallo (husband Paul) of MD and Janet Burch (husband Mike) of MD; a nephew, David Hazel (wife Tara) of MD; three great nephews; and two great nieces. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Walter Herrity.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 1 PM at St. John’s UCC, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA, where Pastor Caroline Saxton will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the church. Graveside services will follow on Friday, October 1, 2021, at 12:30 in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Grove Family Library, 101 S. Ragged Edge Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Rd. West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
