Frank A. “Jeff” Brookens, Jr., age 90, of Chambersburg, died Monday Morning, April 7, 2014 at his home. Born November 17, 1923 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Frank Sr., and Maggie Bohn Brookens. His wife, A. Pearl Miller Brookens, whom he married December 29, 1945, preceded him in death on January 11, 1996.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Jeff served honorably during World War II, having participated in the invasions of Normandy and Iwo Jima. He was employed by the former E.D. Plumber & Sons in Chambersburg for 36 years, retiring in 1984. Jeff was a member of Hume-McNeal-Byers AMVETS Post 224 and its horseshoe league, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and the Chambersburg Club. He was a charter member of the Fayetteville Fire Company. Jeff was instrumental in establishing the Fayetteville Athletic Association. He played baseball for the Fayetteville A’s as well as managing the adult team. He also established and managed a junior team for the Nellie Fox League. Jeff was an avid hunter and golfer, attaining two “Holes in One” during his lifetime.
He is survived by two children, Susan Johnson of Fayetteville, and F. Michael Brookens and wife Kathy of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by two sisters, Eleanor Whelan of Chambersburg and Helen B. Godshall of Richland, PA; his companion, Doris Jean Green; and numerous nieces and nephews. Aside from his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
