Frank Alvin Gilreath; husband, father, brother, son died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Menno Haven Menno Village at the age of 74. He was born on March 28, 1939 to the late Frank Hillery and Florence Marsh Gilreath. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Agnes Lillian Gilreath as well as his brother, Harold Eugene Gilreath and his wife, Patricia Louise Gilreath.
His legacy lives on through his children Joyce Ann Zerhusen, John Patrick Gilreath, Lisa Gilreath Selser, and Melissa Gilreath Lehman. Supporting them in this time of warm reflection are their respective spouses: Joe Zerhusen, Debra Gilreath, Brian Selser, and Shawn Lehman.
Frank fought courageously against the insidious disease of brain cancer. After being diagnosed in October 2012, Frank shared his humor, strength, and vitality with his close family and led them on a journey of hope, humility, and peace.
Frank was a passionate leader in many ways including father, sergeant in the Maryland State Police, director of Loss Prevention at several retail companies, and the Mayor of Mont Alto. His motivation to support a safe environment for others was a theme throughout his life. Frank was known for his unbiased insight and ability to listen. He is forever acknowledged for his influence on others as quoted by one of his troopers, “thanking you for your past kindnesses and respect you showed me, not only as a subordinate, but as a person.”
While serving twenty-five years for the Maryland State Police, he played on their basketball and softball teams. After retiring in 1985, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Grove Family Library to support the lifelong independent learning of all. He believed that everyone should have an opportunity to learn regardless of background or ability to afford an education. He learned a great deal of his wisdom through independent learning and life experience. The family would also like to thank the staff at Menno Haven and Lutheran Home Care & Hospice, Inc. who were wonderful caregivers to Frank and became a part of the family.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11am at the Chapel at Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Chaplain Bob Keener will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
