Fred E. Boss, 81, of Chambersburg, PA, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Chambersburg Hospital. He was a son of the late Raymond E. and Alice Smith Boss. A 1949 graduate of Clairton High School, he went on to study commercial art at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1951 with a Commercial Art Degree. Furthering his education, he went on to attend the former Indiana State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Art Education. He served in the United States Army and was medically discharged. Fred taught art for 31 years at the former Scotland School for Veteran’s Children. While at Scotland School he was the Assistant Track Coach for twenty years and the Head Swimming Coach for 12 years.
Fred was a member of Solomon’s United Church of Christ in New Franklin, the Cumberland Valley Crafts Guild, the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 600 where for 24 years he painted the mirrors for all seasons, and a 50 year member of George Washington Lodge #143 F&AM. He was an avid bird carver, receiving numerous awards at various shows.
Preceded in death by his wife, Janice Wagner Boss, on March 4, 2003, Fred is survived by a daughter, Deborah J. Nitterhouse of Chambersburg, granddaughter Brooke Nitterhouse of Mt. Pleasant, SC, grandson Jason Nitterhouse and wife Carla of Chambersburg, and a brother, Ben Boss and wife Judy, of Castleton, Vermont.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, April 15, 2013 at Solomon’s United Church of Christ with The Rev. Peter Emig officiating. Private interment will be at Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon-1:00 PM Monday at the church. There will be no viewing.
