Fred Ray Hammond, 75, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Sunday evening, August 9, 2015 at NMS Nursing Home, Hagerstown, MD. Born August 1, 1940 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Thomas P. and Barbara Hoffman Hammond. Fred was a graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and served with the Army National Guard for eight years as Staff Sergeant in Troop B, 1st Squadron 104th Armored Cavalry (The Governor’s Troop). He was employed early in his life at Forrester’s Ford – Lincoln – Mercury and then worked throughout his life as a diesel mechanic and a farmer. He retired in 2003 from the Mt. Cydonia Sand division of Valley Quarries. Fred was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and was one of the founders of the Cumberland Valley Antique Engine and Machine Association. He could fix anything. He had served as a Cub Scout Master for four years and was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed spending time hunting with his sons.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Jean Sites Hammond, whom he married November 5, 1965; three sons, Thomas F. Hammond of Quincy, Dale M. (Nicole) Hammond of Shade Gap, and William G. (Sherry) Hammond of Waynesboro; four grandchildren, Curtis, Lauren, Reba, and Justin Hammond; two great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by special friends Landon and Pattie Horn of Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, August 14, 2015 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Rachel Keller and Rev. Suzanne Elliott will officiate. Interment will follow at Brown’s Mill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
