Fred J. Rock, age 91, of Chambersburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday evening, October 1, 2014 at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center while surrounded by his loving family. Born December 17, 1922, he was a son of the late Charles and Ethel Hess Rock. His beloved wife of 64 years, Betty Noll Rock, preceded him in death on November 18, 2007.
Fred was a 1941 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. A U.S. Army veteran, Fred served honorably during WWII in the Pacific theater and took part in the liberation of the Philippines and the battles for New Guinea and Luzon. Fred was a public servant of Franklin County for 30 years serving as County Commissioner for 22 of those 30 years, until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, entertaining the elderly with his guitar, attending numerous sporting events, and spending time with his family. He was very active in community events and fundraising dedicating many hours to numerous civic organizations and served as the president of the Pond Bank Community Center.
Fred is survived by four children, Carol Wagaman (Howard) of Waynesboro, Bonita Grove (James) of Chillicothe, OH, Barbara Cleary (John) of Chambersburg, and Steven Rock (Sandra) of Pond Bank; six grandchildren, Eric Wagaman, Jeremy Wagaman (Emily), Dana Grove-Letts (Robert), Charles Rock (Kari), Courtney Greenwood (Jason), and Nicole Shearer (Luke); seven great-grandchildren, Sarah, Rayanna, and Emma Wagaman, Noah and Logan Rock, Kane Greenwood, and James Paul Letts; two borthers, Nelson Rock (Lena), and Robert Rock (late Doris); and a brother-in-law, William Noll (Linda). In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Paul, and Melvin Rock; and two sisters, Emma Wagaman and Isabelle Rock.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. James W. Grove, Rev. Lawton Jacobs, and Rev. Trisha Brant will officiate. Interment with military honors provided by the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will follow the service in Mt. Zion cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Monday, October 6, 2014, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Fred J. Rock Memorial Trout Fund at the Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club Trout Nursery c/o M&T Bank.
