Frederick “Olen” Mowen, 71, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Monday, August 7, 2023 in the Chambersburg Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born December 26, 1951 in Waynesboro, PA he was the son of the late Emory S. and Hazel L. (Swisher) Mowen.
He was a graduate of Greencastle Antrim High School with the Class of 1970. Olen served with the United States Army during Vietnam from January 22, 1971 until his honorable discharge March 23, 1972. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device during his time in the service.
Olen was employed at Reynolds and Reynolds, Chambersburg and then later as mechanic for Truck Enterprises, Hagerstown, MD. He was a member of the St. Thomas Sportsman’s Association where he formerly served as a board member. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting. Olen also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kathie L. (Shaffer) Mowen who he married July 6, 1994; two children, Ryan Mowen and his wife Brooke of Mercersburg, PA and Amanda Porter and her husband Mike of Chambersburg; two step-sons, Michael Sites of Fayetteville, PA and Todd Sites and his wife Janice of Carlisle, PA; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-granddaughters; three siblings, E. Dwain Mowen and his wife Linda of State Line, PA, Marsha Snider and her husband Nelson and Shawn Mowen and his wife Laurie both of Chambersburg, PA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, August 14, 2023 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Mr. Brian Helfrick officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday morning in the funeral home.
