Garry Lee Long, age 70, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away in the Chambersburg Hospital on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Born June 5, 1943 in Logansport, IN, he was the son of the late Edward M. and Thelma L. Conwell Long.
A U.S. Army veteran, Garry served honorably during the Vietnam conflict. He went on to serve as an Air Traffic Controller and later program Manager for the F.A.A., retiring in 2003 after 37 ½ years of service. Garry was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, where he served as a board member and helped with the Media at the church. He enjoyed computers and woodworking.
Surviving is his wife of 39 years, Sue Ellen Gaylord Long, whom he married on October 5, 1974; two children, Brett J. Long (wife Sharon) of Racine, WI and Erica K. Gainey of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Heather M. Gainey, Amber L., and John W. Long; and three siblings, R. Wayne Long (wife Sue) of Carmel, IN, Myrna Simonin (husband Stanley) of Monticello, IN, and Brenda Crowe (husband Richard) of Wolcott, IN. Garry is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Long.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 11 AM at the Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, 2509 Black Gap Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Christopher Little will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Church Missions, 2509 Black Gap Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Rd. West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
