Gary “Smoke” L. Zimmerman
Smoke Zimmerman, 63, of Fayetteville, passed into Christ’s glory on May 13, 2011.
Smoke was born on February 16, 1948 in Paradise, PA, the son of Robert P. and Dorothy M. (Breneman) Zimmerman. He was the devoted husband of Susette L. (Hoover) Zimmerman to whom he was happily married for 42 years.
Zimmerman served honorably in the US Navy during the Vietnam era and retired in 2009 from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources where he served 39 years most recently as the Michaux State Forest’s Assistant District Forester. He was a long-time attendee of Falling Spring Presbyterian Church and a Sustaining member of the National Rifle Association.
Smoke was an avid outdoorsman and lifelong master craftsman. He served 20 years as a PIAA soccer referee and 15 years as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Chambersburg, PA Troop 127. He also enjoyed outdoor recreational activities with his wife and family, was an active sports enthusiast, and had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. Above all, Smoke loved spending time with his family who adored him.
He is survived by his father, Robert P. Zimmerman, his wife, Susette L. Zimmerman, and two sons, Travis L. Zimmerman and wife Suzanne of Hershey, and Eric L. Zimmerman and wife Kathleen of Mechanicsburg, and his seven beloved grandchildren Elizabeth, Holden, Koen, Beck, Treyton, Grantham, and Braden Zimmerman.
Smoke’s memorial service will be held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Fayetteville on Saturday, May 21st beginning at 3pm.
