George T. “Tom” Owens, Sr., age 76, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at the Golden Living Center, Frederick, MD on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Born on June 18, 1940, in Marion, VA, he was the son of the late George and Pauline Cregger Owens.
Mr. Owens was a 1958 graduate of Marion High School in Marion, VA where he excelled in track. A U.S. Army veteran, Tom served his country honorably from 1958 to 1961. He worked for the Baltimore City Police Department as a motorcycle police sergeant for 28 years. After retiring from the force in 1986, he continued to serve his community in a different capacity and became an ordained and licensed pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Chambersburg. Tom preached at the church along with the Chambersburg Senior Center and Chambersburg Hospital. Tom was very active in his community and was Commander of the American Legion B&O 81, a Deacon and a Brotherhood Director. He loved to read and was a devoted Baltimore Orioles and Ravens fan. An avid bird watcher, he enjoyed word search books and all sorts of puzzle books.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Judith A. Hoy Owens, whom he married on September 24, 1960; a daughter, Tamara E. Kingsland and her husband, William, of Pasadena, MD; a son, George T. Owens, Jr. and his wife, Siobhan, of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Billy Kingsland, Keris Kingsland and Collin Owens; five siblings, James “Jimmy” Owens and his wife, Donna, of VA, Jean Dishner and her husband, Bill, of NC, Jesse Owens and his wife, Lisa, of VA, Linda Blevins and her husband, Clifton, of VA and Lester Owens of VA; one brother-in-law, William “Bill” Taylor, of VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Taylor.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Pastor Kenny Craig will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:00 PM until the time of the service in the funeral home.
