George Steele

March 18, 1930 — December 2, 2016

George G. Steele, Jr., 86, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Menno Haven. He was born in Philadelphia on March 18, 1930 to the late George and Dorothy (Hileman) Steele. George is survived by his wife, Pam; three children, George G. Steele, III (wife Gaye, daughters Eppie Helms and Elysse Helms), daughter Linda Steele; and son Charlie Steele. George also has two sisters, Mary McCurdy (husband Bob) and Jane Edmundson (husband the late John). George’s oldest sister and her husband Bill both preceded him in death.

George’s early education was at the Penn Charter School for boys. He transferred to Jenkintown High School in the 10th grade and then joined the Marine Corps following graduation. After completing his first stint in the Marine Corps, George attended Lafayette College but was soon called back into the Corps during the Korean Conflict. Following the war, George decided that he wanted to be in the working world. During this time of his life he was hired to work in production at WCAU television and especially enjoyed filming the Philadelphia Eagles football games. Lastly, George worked for many years in the advertising business in Philadelphia.

His favorite activities were mainly outdoors. He loved golf, but that always took a back seat during hunting season. He followed the calendar and hunted ducks, doves, pheasants, deer, and also spent time fishing. After the kids were on their own, George and his wife Pam retired to Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos and spent many winters in Tucson, AZ. They also began RVing and golfing all over the country. During these escapades, they found Chambersburg and it didn’t take long to decide that was where they wanted to live during their senior years. They considered themselves fortunate to have found such a friendly, quiet lifestyle.

A memorial service and celebration of George’s life will be held in the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church of the Falling Spring, 221 North Main Street, Chambersburg, PA at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 9, 2016. Rev. Dr. Andrew Hart will officiate. Interment will be private.

Contributions in George's memory may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
