George “Walter” Gerhold, 91, of Chambersburg, PA, went home to be with his Savior on Sunday, March 13, 2022. He was born on February 18, 1931 in Chambersburg to the late Harvey M. Gerhold, Sr. and Mabel (Shriver) Gerhold. Walter graduated from the Chambersburg High School, where he played football. He served his country, which he loved, in the US Air Force and was a Korean War veteran. He worked at the Chambersburg Cold Storage, Pet-Ritz, and Giant Foods during his lifetime. Walter was a member of The Open Door Church. He loved to read the Bible and read it through every year until his eyesight prevented him from doing so. He loved to meet new people at church and served as an usher.
His wife, Charlotte Mae Hile Gerhold, whom he married September 25, 1965, preceded him in death on December 12, 2019. Aside from his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Harvey M. Gerhold, Jr., Frank W. Gerhold, Anna M. Gerhold, and Doris K. Sollenberger. He is survived by his nephews, Michael Gerhold, Terry (Donna) Sollenberger, Howard (Linda) Sollenberger; and nieces Carol Jean Caldwell and Polly Fisher; and his sister-in-law, Sandy Gerhold.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 17, 2022 at The Open Door Church, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Mike Sanders and Pastor Carl McKee will officiate. Interment will follow at Air Hill Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday at the church.
