George W. Young, Jr., 83, of Chambersburg and formerly of Washington Grove, MD, passed away Thursday morning, March 15, 2012. Born August 31, 1928 in Washington Grove, MD, he was the son of George W., Sr. and Anna Jannette Lacey Young. Mr. Young was a 1945 graduate of the Gaithersburg High School, a 1946 graduate of the Mercersburg Academy, and a 1950 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College. He served with the US Marine Corps during the Korean War and later went on to receive his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.
Mr. Young practiced law in Maryland for many years and was very active in his community. He was a member of the Ascension Chapel in Gaithersburg and the Masonic Lodge. He volunteered for many years with the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Company, was an active volunteer at the Montgomery General Hospital, and served on the founding steering committee at Shady Grove Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Patrick Young; three children, George W. Young, III of Charlestown, WV, Mary Jannette Bloom and husband Harold R. Bloom, Jr. of Annapolis, MD, and Dawn Hall and husband Jack R. Hall of Mt. Airy, MD; as well as four grandchildren, Stephen Ray Bloom, Jannette Kristina Bloom, Samantha Jane Young, and Jacob Dennis Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Young Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Menno Haven Chapel, 2075 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Chaplain Robert Keener and Chaplain Vernon Isner will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Club Room at Northgate.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Salem Methodist Church, Brookeville, MD. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church’s fellowship hall.
