Gertrude M. Murphy, 77, of Chambersburg, PA went to be with her Lord Friday morning, September 2, 2011. Born September 20, 1933 in Jersey City, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Martha Nagel Okonsky. Gert was a graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in Jersey City and a 1955 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in New York City. She was employed for many years as a registered nurse at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. Gert was a faithful member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg and was a daily communicant at the church. She had a great love for her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Richard E. Murphy, Sr., whom she married August 27, 1955; five children, Bryan P. Murphy and wife Laura of Loveland, OH, Ellen King and husband Kenneth of Haymarket, VA, Richard E. Murphy, Jr. and wife Joanne of Wanaque, NJ, Kathleen Murphy-Kumpf and husband Ryan of Wanamaker, IN, and Amy Elizabeth Murphy and fiancé Dave Cranmer of Harrisburg, NC; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Sachs of Convent Station, NJ and a brother, Raymond Okonsky and wife Trisha of Somerville, NJ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Colonel Frank Okonsky, USMC (ret).

The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James R. O’Brien at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
