Gladys L. Acri, age 97, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at the Menno Haven Brookview Health Center. Gladys was born on August 8, 1924 in Neenah, Wisconsin, and was raised by her grandparents, Lincoln Winch and Carrie Cornish Winch. After living in Wisconsin and Oswego, New York, she resided for the next 60 years in Chambersburg. Gladys was blessed with two wonderful husbands in her life, her first husband of 25 years, Edward Luka, who passed away in 1971, and her second husband of 30 years, Dr. Oliver Acri, who passed away in 2005.
Gladys was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where in her younger years, she volunteered in various church activities. She worked for over thirty years in various administrative positions in Wisconsin, New York and Chambersburg. Gladys was always active in sports. She especially enjoyed bowling, but even more so developed a passion for golf. She and “Doc” Acri were life members of the Chambersburg Country Club , where they both enjoyed the game well into their 90’s. They travelled extensively to Europe, the Middle East, Australia and spent winters in three different Florida homes. While in Florida, Gladys studied the art of sculpture and was honored to have several of her works exhibited at the Chambersburg Council for the Arts. Years ago, she explored her study further while spending a month in Carrera, Italy and while there, sculpted a statue of the Trojan Warrior, which is presently exhibited in the lobby of the CASHS gymnasium. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, playing bridge, and was quite a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast.
She is survived by her son, and daughter-in-law, Paul and Beth Luka, of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Caroline L Cowper (husband Matthew) of Collegeville, PA, and Christopher Edward Luka (wife Kira) of Glenshaw, PA; and 4 great grandchildren, Sam, Whitney, Will Luka and Ryan Cowper.
Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Monday, January 31, 2022 at 10:00AM, with Rev. Fr. Allan Wolfe officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the Grant Street Loft, Chambersburg (directly across from the church). A private family interment will be held in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Gladys was a cat-lover and enjoyed the company of her adopted cat, Missy, for the past 10 years. Donations in her memory may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter 5051 Letterkenny Road West Chambersburg, PA 17201; or to the MennoHaven Benevolent Fund 2011 Scotland Avenue Chambersburg, PA 17201.
