Glen Perry

Glen R. Perry, Sr., 85, of St. Thomas, PA, died Monday morning, December 10, 2012 at Menno Haven. Born July 8, 1927 in Staunton, VA, he was a son of the late Leroy Lester and Belle Rice Perry. He served with the US Army during WWII and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1960 and a Master’s Degree in 1962 from the former Shippensburg State Teachers College. He went on to receive a second Master’s Degree from the former Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. Mr. Perry was employed as a school teacher and principal with the Chambersburg Area School District teaching for 26 years and 16½ years at Andrew Buchanan Elementary School prior to his retirement in 1986. Prior to teaching he served as a minister at Cold Spring United Brethren Church in Fayetteville for two years, Strinestown United Brethren Church in York for two years, and at Salem United Brethren Church in Chambersburg for eight years. He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and former member of Phi Delta Kappa. Affectionately known as “Mr. Science”, Mr. Perry enjoyed living life to the fullest and his hobbies included gardening, fishing, camping, and bird watching.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet M. Paxton Perry, whom he married May 17, 1947; two sons, Glen R. Perry, Jr. and wife Diane of Chambersburg, PA and Ronald L. Perry, PhD. and wife Kathleen of Cranberry Twp., PA; five grandchildren, Jenifer Waldie and husband Ben of Phoenixville, PA, Jonathan Perry and wife Ronee of North Huntington, PA, Alison Dubs and husband Brian of Chambersburg, PA, Brendan Perry and Brian Perry, both of Cranberry Twp., PA; and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Olin Perry and wife Patsy and Jay Perry (USAF, Ret.) and wife Mary; as well as a sister-in-law, Mildred Rineman Perry (wife of the late Donald). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Esther Kauffman Perry; a sister, Phyllis Stewart (wife of William); and sister-in-law Phyllis Perry.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, December 14, 2012 at King Street United Brethren Church, 162 East King Street, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Lester F. Stine and Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by Members of the Charles Nitterhouse, Post 1599, VFW Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7-9:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and from 9-10:00 AM Friday at the church.
