Gloria (Barnes) Carnathan, 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday afternoon, January 13, 2014 at Menno Haven where she had been a guest for 15 years. Born December 17, 1924 in Lancaster, PA, she was the daughter of the late Elmer C. and Pauline Shoop Barnes. She was a 1942 graduate of the former St. Thomas Township High School where she was honored to serve as class Valedictorian. Mrs. Carnathan went on to graduate from the Temple University School of Nursing. She married George H. Carnathan on October 26, 1946 and he preceded her in death in September of 1985. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carnathan resided in Media, PA until June of 1961 when they returned to St. Thomas where George joined Gloria’s family in business at E.C. Barnes, Inc. A registered nurse, she retired in 1981 from the former Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, MD as the Patient Care Coordinator. She was a former member of the United Methodist Church of St. Thomas and most recently attended services at the Menno Haven Chapel. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years while living in Media. An avid reader and movie lover, she enjoyed traveling, and had a great love for animals.
She is survived by her daughter, Polly C. Jaymes and husband Steven; two granddaughters, Melanie J. and husband David Lowe, Jr. and Katie R. and husband Raymond Berger, Jr; and four great-grandchildren, Rebecca J. Berger, Abby E. Berger, Makenna J. Lowe and Jaymes D. Lowe, all of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. James E. Barnes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Chaplain Vernon Isner officiating. Interment will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday.
