Gregory J. Kauffman, 66, formerly of Chambersburg, died unexpectedly of natural causes while passing through the port town of Beaufort, NC. Born on November 13, 1948 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Murray E. Kauffman and Mary Jane Feightner Kauffman. Greg grew up in Chambersburg and served in the U.S. Army. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Shippensburg University and his PhD from the University of Tennessee. He retired as a water pollution biologist for the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection. Throughout his life, Greg loved the outdoors and often went hiking and camping. He was an avid cyclist who completed numerous challenging treks in the U.S., Europe and South America. He also loved sailing. When Greg retired, he refurbished a 38 foot Morgan sail boat and launched his first major voyage that would take him along the east coast of the U.S. to the Bahamas. It was during this trip that he died of natural causes while docked in Beaufort. Greg is survived by one brother, Thomas Kauffman and his wife, Jofa Mummert Kauffman, and their daughter Mekia Truclaye Kauffman of York Springs, PA.; his sister-in-law Lois Brechbiel-Kauffman, nephew Bryce Kauffman; niece Heather Kauffman-Satterfield, her husband Peter Satterfield and their three children Rhys, Aynsley and Pyran. Aside from his parents Murray and Mary Jane, Greg was preceded in death by his brother Eric. A true adventurer, Greg will be remembered and missed. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, where members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.
