H. Roger Talhelm, 67, of Chambersburg, PA, died unexpectedly on Thursday evening, August 31, 2017, at his home. Born September 26, 1949, in Waynesboro, PA, he was a son of the late Harry “Bub” and Thelma Virginia Hoffman Talhelm. Roger was a 1967 graduate of the Greencastle-Antrim High School and served in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps from December of 1968 – December of 1971. He served in the Army Reserve until December of 1980. Roger had worked at Grove Manufacturing and later retired from Letterkenny Army Depot after twenty-five years of service. Roger also worked as a bartender at B.P.O Elks Lodge #600, Hume-McNeil Byers AMVETS Post 224, and the Marine Corps League and currently worked as a bartender at Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion and the Chambersburg Club all in Chambersburg. Roger loved playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of American Legion Post 46, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, AMVETS Post 224, the Landis-McCleaf Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and the Chambersburg Club, all in Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Talhelm; daughter, Misti Nicarry of Greencastle; son Shawn Talhelm of Greencastle; step-daughter Chelsea Heckman of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Taylor and Tré Wood, Colby, and Britton Talhelm, Kristina Heckman, and Kaden Stonecipher; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He is also survived by his half-brother, Ronald Griffith (Loni) of Fayetteville; and two brothers, Gary Talhelm of Greencastle, and Robert Talhelm (Dana) of Cearfoss, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half-brother, Raymond Gene Griffith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, September 6, 2017, in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Kenny Craig will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard, will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00 PM Tuesday and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
