Harold Armstrong

January 2, 1922 — April 24, 2022

Harold “Bud” Armstrong passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Somerford Place in Hagerstown, MD. He was 100 years old. Harold retired from Frick Company in Waynesboro and later worked part time for the J.C. Penney Co. at the Southgate Mall in Chambersburg. Many may remember Harold as “Buddy” Armstrong and his country and western group “The Knights of the Road” from the 1950’s. The group played at local festivals and on the radio at WCHA on Saturday afternoons. Bud lived his whole life in the town of New Franklin and was an active participant in the formation of the New Franklin Ruritan Club and was an active member for many years. He served as an Auditor for Guilford Township and was a life-long member of Solomon’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Grindstone Hill where he served as Secretary of the Sunday school for many years and served as a council member.

Harold is preceded in death by his wife, Edna Louise (nee Shaffer) Armstrong, his father, John Leslie “Les” Armstrong, his mother, Myrtle Anna, and three brothers, Ray, Marvin, and Kenneth “Ted” Armstrong.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia A. Gelwicks (Franklin) of Hagerstown, MD; his son, Larry J. Armstrong (Paulette) of Downingtown, PA; four grandsons, Jeffrey Gelwicks (Mary Beth) of Indiana, Christopher Gelwicks (Terri) of North Carolina, Thomas Armstrong (Jennifer) of Paoli, PA, and Benjaman Armstrong (Jacqueline) of New Jersey; eleven great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Landon, Conner, Cameron, Noah, Jacob, Emily, Natalie, Charlie, Hunter, and Maxwell; and one great-great-grandchild, Noel.

Harold will be buried at Grindstone Hill Cemetery in a private, graveside service.

The family requests there be no flowers and suggests contributions in Harold’s memory be made to Solomon’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4856 Wayne Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202; New Franklin Ruritan, 2500 New Franklin Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202; or to Hospice of Washington County, 11370 Caring Pathways Lane, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
