Harold L. Barnes, age 81, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2011 in his home while surrounded by his family. Born on December 1, 1929 in Greencastle, PA, he was a son of the late Paul and Alice Spangler Barnes.
Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1948-1954. He was retired from the former A&P Grocery Store chain, and he also worked in office equipment repair. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 and the Hume McNeil Byers Amvets Post 224, all in Chambersburg and the Miniature Carousel Builders Club.
He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Beverly A. Coolbeth Barnes, whom he married on November 7, 1953; two sons, Calvin R. (and wife, Louise) of Hardwick, VT and Brian K. (and wife, Wanda) of Chambersburg; brother, Calvin R. Barnes and sister, Betty A. Barnes, both of Chambersburg; 5 grandchildren, Brian Barnes Jr., Nicole, Hilary and Jordan Barnes, and Christina Shields, as well as 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Bill Shields.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with Rev. Dick Williams and Rev. Dianne Salter officiating. Interment will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, where members of VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 PM on Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 225 S. 2nd St. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
