Harriet Cutler Glasgow, formerly of Chambersburg, died Monday morning, September 8, 2014 in Quincy, PA. She was born November 14, 1921 to Irwin and Louise (Northwood) Cutler at Chestnut Level, PA. She attended Drumore, PA schools and graduated from Quarryville High School. Harriet received a B.S. in Nursing from Cornell University and New York Hospital. She married Walter Hershour Glasgow on September 5, 1942. To this union were born three children – Shirley, Richard, and Donald Glasgow.
Most people remember Harriet as the co-owner of Glasgow Sewing Center in Chambersburg. Harriet and husband Walter operated the Sewing Center and Glasgow’s Recreational Vehicles and Camping Center until 1983, when Walter passed away. Harriet continued to manage the Sewing Center until its closing in 1985. Her children remember her as a remarkable woman and loving mother. In the 1950’s Harriet truly did it all, long before today’s model of a modern woman. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts, a Girl Scouts cookie mom, Sunday school teacher, church nursery caregiver, and loving wife and business partner to Walter. They were long-time, active members of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring in Chambersburg, PA. Her children recall the loving and generous spirit that was their mother. She was humble and did not realize the positive impact she had on her family, customers, employees, and others.
After closing the business in 1985, Harriet moved to Sebring, FL. There she and companion Bill Wilson enjoyed the sun and gardening until returning to Pennsylvania in 2003. They made their home a Quincy United Methodist Home (now Presbyterian Senior Living) in 2003. Bill passed away June 15, 2014.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother Irwin A.; and her husband Walter. Survivors include her children – Shirley (Dr. George) Roth of Woolwich, ME; Dr. Richard (Nancy Martin) of Colorado Springs, CO; and Donald (Patricia Bender) of Fort Loudon, PA; grandchildren – Dr. Katherine Dauge-Roth (Dr. Alexandre); Rev. Matthew (Stacey Ellison) Glasgow; George (Tamar Halpern) Roth; Dr. Martha (Zachary) Caron; Andrew Roth (Francesca Basilico); Sarah (Silvio) Mejia; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Monday, September 22, 2014 at The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 AM until the time of service as well as following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
