Harry W. Appenzellar, Jr., 91, of Chambersburg, PA, died Thursday, March 15, 2012 at his home. Born May 11, 1920 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Harry W. and Nellie M. Henneberger Appenzellar. He graduated with certification in pre-flight training from Marshall University in Huntington, WV and obtained his pilot’s license. He then served with the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He had also flown for Madam Chiang Kai-Shek during the Chinese Revolution in the 1940’s. Early in his life he was employed at the former Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, MD and later retired from Boeing Aircraft where he worked as a Production Engineer. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, both in Chambersburg. Harry had a great love for life and enjoyed traveling, country and gospel music, and airplanes. He was an avid deer hunter. His wife, Mary J. Pangle Appenzellar, whom he married in 1944, preceded him in death on October 7, 2010.
He is survived by his brother, David Appenzellar of Hagerstown, MD; his foster daughter, Joanne O’Neill, her husband Tom and their children TJ, Doug, and Jesse, all of New London, PA, and his God Daughters, Tina Frazier, her husband Frank and their son Dylan of Greencastle, PA and Lita Naessig and her husband Fred, also of Greencastle. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Rosehill Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
