Harry D. Black, Jr., age 79, of Chambersburg, PA, was called home on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at Menno Haven. Born January 11, 1939, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Harry D., Sr. and Rhoda Buterbaugh Black.
Mr. Black was a 1957 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. He worked at Harrisburg Dairies for 45 years, retiring in 2002. After retirement Mr. Black went on to work at the Butcher Shoppe for 15 years. A dedicated servant to his Lord and his church, Harry served as a Sunday School teacher for over 45 years, he sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, and served as a lay speaker for the church, where he loved to preach. In addition to his family and church, he loved band music and playing the harmonica.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Jean C. Hoover Black, whom he married on July 31, 1960; and two siblings, Lois Black of Chambersburg, PA and Jay Black (wife Ginger) of Chambersburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018, at 12 noon at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201, where Pastor Layne Miller will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address.
