Harry Dunkle

Harry S. Dunkle, age 84 of Spring Run, PA passed away at the Claremont Nursing and Rehab Center in Carlisle, PA. Born August 30, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Helen Janicka Dunkle
A U.S. Marine during WWII, Harry served from 1946 until 1947, after his discharge, Harry went on to work at the J and L Steel Mill in Pittsburgh at night, while going to and graduating from the Pittsburgh Diesel and Automotive School in 1949. After graduation he went on to serve for 28 years as an Army Reserve Soldier, retiring in 1978 as a Master First Sergeant and at Letterkenny Army Depot for 25 years, also retiring in 1978 as a Missile Repair Specialist; where he was certified for the Nike and Hercules Program and the Hawk Missile Reconditioning training program. He was very proud of his service to his country, some of the most notable accomplishments was being a marksman and sharpshooter as a Marine and graduating from Officer’s Candidate School in the Army, in addition, he was part of the U.S. Army’s Rifle team. He was a Life member of the James W. McCartney Post 232 American Legion, and a Life Member of the VFW in Shippensburg, NARFE, and AARP. Harry was most proud of being a family man, however fishing came in a close second and then he also enjoyed hunting and gardening.
Surviving are four children, Carol J. Bowser (Michael) of Mechanicsburg, PA, Dora M. Wolfe (Richard) of Roxbury, PA, Thomas S. Dunkle of Mercersburg, PA, and Kim A. Parson (Steven) of Shippensburg, PA; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and two siblings, Wilbert E. Dunkle and Doloris Hutton both of Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Viola J. Patterson on December 24, 1976; a grandson, Thomas A. Dunkle; and a sister Martha Tomasko.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 11 AM at the Agett-Geisel Funeral Home, 18875 Main St., Dry Run, PA, where Pastor Keith Eslinger will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 14, 2013 from 6-9 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Interment will follow in Upper Path Valley Cemetery, where members of the James W. McCartney Post 232, Color Guard will conduct Military Honors.
