Hazel McNew

March 16, 1911 — October 10, 2012

Hazel Byers McNew, 101, of Fayetteville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 in Sentara Hospital while visiting with her son who resides in Virginia Beach, VA. Born March 16, 1911 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late John W. Sr. and Theressa V. Miller Byers. She retired from the former Stanley Company in Chambersburg where she had been employed for more than thirty years. She attended the Fayetteville Church of God. Hazel loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time in Virginia Beach with her son. Her lifelong dream was to go to Hawaii and when she was 99 years old her dream came to be as she traveled to Hawaii to visit her great-granddaughter and husband and her two week old great-great-grandson. She also made three trips to the Holy Lands. Hazel enjoyed teaching her granddaughter to crochet and working in her garden and then canning the vegetables that she grew. She also enjoyed spending time every week making cookies and playing Phase 10 with her son and son-in-law. Her husband, Clyde E. McNew, Sr., preceded her in death on April 30, 1977.

She is survived by three children, Clyde E. McNew, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Roy I McNew and wife Carol of Chambersburg, and Mary M. Rosenberry and husband Gerald of Fayetteville; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, John Byers, Jr. and Wayne Byers, both of Fayetteville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy M. Zullinger; a son, John H. McNew; a granddaughter, Doris Jean Raymond; three brothers, Leslie, McClellan, and Warren Byers; and a sister, Dorothy Brechbill.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 17, 2012 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Staci Geesaman will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday and from 10:30 – 11:30 AM Wednesday at the funeral home.
