Helen H. Alber, age 89, of 520 Bender Avenue, Chambersburg and formerly of Hazleton, PA passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital. She was born on August 29, 1924 in Hazle Township to the late Michael and Helen (Pollock) Harascak.
She was a 1942 graduate of Hazle Township High School and began her career in business working for the rationing board during WWII. She was employed for over twenty years in the office of P. Deisroth Sons as the daily auditor.
On January 19, 1946 she married Harold L. (Midge) Alber in The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. Together, they raised their four children until his death in 1991.
Helen was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hazleton, serving as a member of Church Council, Altar Guild, Volunteer Group, kitchen committee and president of WELCA. She was a long-standing member of the Hazleton Women’s Club where she served as president of the local group as well as the Luzerne County Women’s Club.
In 2011, she moved to Chambersburg where she continued her service to Trinity Lutheran Church of Chambersburg as a member of WELCA, Third Thursday and as a volunteer providing lunches at the House of Grace. She also enjoyed knitting on Thursday afternoons at Northgate with the “Knitwits”.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Jeffrey William Alber. She is survived by daughters Diane L. Goss, Orwigsburg, PA and Nancy J. (George) Glen, Chambersburg and son David M. (Mary) Alber, Clermont, FL; grandsons Michael, R. Goss, York, PA; Patrick J.(Ethel) Glen, Washington, DC; Christopher D. (Tara) Glen, Silver Spring, MD and granddaughters Tracey L (Jeremy) Gustitus, Schuylkill Haven, PA; and Jennifer and Janelle Alber, Clermont, FL. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chambersburg on Saturday, January 25, at 12:00 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the House of Grace 307 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg PA 17201.
