Helen R. Stoops, age 89, of Chambersburg, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014 at her home. Born October 17, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Fannie Slonaker Yeager. Her husband, Shover W. “Bill” Stoops preceded her in death on August 31, 1968.
Helen spent her early life as a homemaker. She then worked at the former Leader Nursing Home in Chambersburg (now ManorCare Health Services) and most recently at Wheelocks Hatchery until her retirement in 1990. She loved spending time with her cats, working outside the house in her vegetable garden and going to yard sales, flea markets, and craft shows with her daughter. She also loved traditional country music and had the privilege of seeing many of her favorite singers.
She is survived by her two sons, Larry E. Stoops and Tony A. Stoops both of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Shawn Stoops of Waynesboro, Kristyn Shank of Waynesboro, and Brandon Elliott of Chambersburg; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen is preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly J. Elliott; eight sisters; and two brothers.
A graveside service to honor Helen’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on November 24, 2014 in Lincoln Cemetery. Rev. Terry Hoke will officiate. The family requests the omission of flowers but asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
