Henry “Hank” Greenawalt, Jr., 76, of Chambersburg, PA went to be with his Lord and Savior on 6 November 2014 while surrounded by his family.
Hank was born October 21, 1938 in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, PA, to the late Henry Brown and Mary Elizabeth Eckert Greenawalt. A 1957 graduate of Hershey High School, Hank served honorably in the US Navy from 1958 through 1964, primarily serving aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic.
He spent most of his career in the foodservice industry as both a teacher and operator, earning a degree as a Chef Instructor from Penn State University and teaching aspiring chefs at the Willow Street Vo-Tech in Lancaster, Muhlenburg Vo-Tech in Reading, and the Yorktowne Business Institute. Hank also filled a variety of foodservice management roles over the years with various chains and franchises, most recently operating H. Greenawalt & Associates Food Service Management and Consulting. He was a lifelong member and volunteer with The Boy Scouts of America, earning the Honor Scout Award in 1951 and later the Eagle Scout Award in 1953. When not teaching, Hank managed the summer foodservice operations at a variety of Boy Scout Camps to include Hawk Mountain, Camp Mack, and Camp Hidden Valley as well as several Girl Scout Camps.
Hank became a born again Christian in 1972; it was the defining moment of his life. He was licensed with the Southern Baptist Convention and filled a number of pulpits over the years in Western and Central Pennsylvania. Hank attended Zion United Church of Christ in Newburg and Salem United Brethren Church in Chambersburg. When not working, he enjoyed fishing, television, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Corinne Eileen Miller Greenawalt, whom he married November 26, 1970 at Palm Lutheran Church in Palmyra, PA; his sister, Dorothy Greenawalt Fetrow; six children – Cristine, Cindy, Holly, Jon, James, and Jason; and ten grandchildren. Also surviving are many cousins and friends.
A praise service and celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November, 12 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Pastor Bob Baldwin and Pastor Ron Windle officiating. Interment with military honors will be at 2:00 PM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:00 AM at the funeral home.
