Herbert Behrens

Herbert T. Behrens, 87, of Chambersburg, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Menno Haven. Born May 3, 1931 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Herman and Bertha Pruser Behrens. Mr. Behrens was a 1949 graduate of the Curtis High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Wagner College in 1955. He served with the US Navy for 41 years, retiring from military service in March of 1991. Early in his career he was employed as a chemist with CIBA and then Warner-Lambert pharmaceutical companies in New Jersey. He began his federal career with the US Food and Drug Administration in 1964 as a Consumer Safety Officer, retiring in 1995 after 31 years of service. He was a member of the Montgomery Central Lions Club in Gaithersburg, MD, the Greencastle Lions Club, and the Chambersburg Noontime Lions Club. He was active with the Lions Club International Stamp Club for many years. His hobbies included stamp collecting, reading, gardening, and cruising. His wife, Virginia Seeth Behrens, whom he married January 19, 1954, preceded him in death on December 1, 2017.

He is survived by three daughters Rhonda Behrens of Pevely, MO, Karen Behrens of Chambersburg, Sheri Stephens and husband David of Chambersburg; his step-granddaughter, Victoria Davies; and his great-granddaughter, Olivia Davies. He is also survived by his sister, Renate Behrens Sackoff of Kendall Park, NJ, and his first cousin Margaret Pruser Hauck and husband Fred of Putnam Valley, NY

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 25, 2018 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Interment will be at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Minister Charles Hill will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 2595 Interstate Dr suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the American Cancer Society, Franklin/Fulton Unit, 924 North Colonial Avenue, York, PA 17403.
