Herbert J. Hess, 94, of Chambersburg, PA passed from this life to his Heavenly Home, September 30, 2022. Born May 11, 1928 in Harrisonville, PA he was the son of the late Jobe W. and Nina E. (Bard) Hess.
He served with the United States Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954. Herb was employed as an electronics technician leader for Letterkeny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA and traveled to other countries many times during his career. He retired after 33 and half years.
Herb was a staunch member of Chambersburg First Church of God since 1951. He served on the council for 30 years; also as a Sunday School teacher, usher and sang in the Christian Fun Bunch Choir. He was a member of NARFE and the VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg. He loved hunting, camping, watching NASCAR, and going to many gospel sings.
He was married to his first wife, Betty (Mills) Hess since January 10, 1948. They had many wonderful years together until her passing in May 2010. Herb was married to his second wife Carol (Frey) Hess since May 11, 2012 until her passing in September 2020. He always enjoyed spending time in Florida for many years with his late wives.
He is survived by a sister Quetta Walls of St. Thomas, PA; a number of nieces and nephews; and three step-children. In addition to his parents and wives, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Velva Warsing, Wilbur Hess and Maxine Mellott.
Services will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Grand Point Church, 2230 Grand Point Road, Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Pastor Don Drury and Pastor Lawrence Metzler officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday evening in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 as well as one hour prior to the service Thursday afternoon in the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made Grand Point Church, Outreach Ministry at the above address.
