Herbert R. “Butch” McElwain, age 92, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday morning, October 30, 2014 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born August 5, 1922 in Bellwood, PA, he was a son of the late John R. and Anna Mary Hillard McElwain. His beloved wife of 52 years, Ella Mae Snyder McElwain, preceded him in death on February 8, 1999.
A U.S. Army veteran, Butch served honorably during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge from the Army, he worked as a machine operator at TB Woods until his retirement in 1984 with 38 years of service. Butch was a member of the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion in Chambersburg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his lawn. He also took great care of his wife, Ellie, for many years.
Butch is survived by three children, Michael R. McElwain and wife Evelyn of Fayetteville, Herbert P. “Pat” McElwain of Chambersburg, and Bonnie K. Stahl and husband Darryl of Chambersburg; five grandchildren, Michelle I. Traxler of TN, Mandi Jo McElwain-White and husband Shawn of Glenside, PA, Alicia R. Honodel and husband Stuart of Waynesboro, Scott P. McElwain of Chambersburg, and Kristen N. Stahl (Matt Parker) of Port Trevorton, PA; six great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Grove of Chambersburg. Aside from his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest McElwain; and a sister, Ida Mae Day.
Funeral services to honor Butch’s life will be private. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. A private interment will be held at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Franklin/Fulton Division, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043.
