Herbert D. Rife, age 81, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born January 1, 1933 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Melvin K. and Florence E. Leedy Rife.
A 1947 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Herb went on to serve honorably in the US Army during the Korea Conflict. He continued his government service as a rural route carrier for the U. S. Post Office for over 30 years, where he retired in 1996. He was a member of the Chambersburg Club, VFW post 1599, Amvets Post 224, Marine Corp League, the American Legion Post 46, and the Elks Club, all in Chambersburg. An avid outdoorsman, Herb enjoyed going fishing and especially hunting. He also enjoyed sports, he played baseball for the Chambersburg Maroons, and officiated numerous baseball and football games in the area.
Surviving is his wife, Doris Reath Rife, two children, Bruce D. Rife (wife Angie) of Fayetteville, PA and Marcia A. Whitmore (husband James) of Chambersburg, PA; two step-sons, Harold Armstrong of Camp Hill, PA and Tim Armstrong (wife Lisa) of Mechanicsburg, PA; four grandchildren, Drew Rife, Jeremy and Jessica Whitmore and Madison Armstrong; and three siblings, Warren K. Rife (wife Lorraine) of Chambersburg, PA, Edward K. Rife, Sr. (wife Nancy) of Chambersburg, PA, and Gladys C. Bennett (husband Bud) of Chambersburg, PA.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 1 PM in Salem Cemetery, Letterkenny Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
