Herman H. “Shorty” Woodal, 82, of Fayetteville, PA passed away at 3:43 AM Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born August 20, 1928 in McConnellsburg, he was a son of the late Chester and Annie Daisy Mae Oyler Woodal.
A US Army veteran, Shorty served honorably during the Korean Conflict; he then went to work as a machinist for the Landis Tool Company for 42 years; where he retired in 1994. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, the Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224, and the Izaak Walton League, Berkeley County West Virginia Chapter. Shorty enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, camping, gardening, square dancing with the Shippen Squares, and watching NASCAR. His beloved wife Ruth E. Dice Woodal preceded him in death on October 6, 2006.
He is survived by his three children, Dennis A. Woodal and wife Paula, Douglas H. Woodal and wife Wanda, and Debra K. Kauffman and husband Robin E., all of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren, Matthew Woodal and fiancé Kathy of Greencastle, Loretta Zimmerman and husband Adam of Shippensburg, Craig Woodal and wife Jennifer of Chambersburg, Nikki Krug of Chambersburg, Stephanie Woodal of Lock Haven, PA, Cuyler Upperman and wife Holly of Greencastle, and Dylan Upperman of Saint Thomas; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nellie and Beulah. Aside from his wife and parents, Shorty was preceded in death by three siblings, Helen, Martha and Raymond.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2011 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Garry Culler will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, May 5, 2011 and one hour prior to the service on Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Izaak Walton League, 284 Izaak Walton Road, Martinsburg, WV 25402
