Herthal C. Hixson Raia, age 80, of Orrtanna, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 in the Select Specialty Hospital in York, PA. Born on November 10, 1930 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Lester Simon Kriner and Anna Catherine Ricker Kriner.

She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Anthony Raia; two daughters, Barbara (and husband, Philip) Byers of Shippensburg and Sally Ann Hixson, also of Shippensburg; six brothers, Russell of Chambersburg, Lester of Shippensburg, Joseph, Leonard, Richard, and Thomas, all of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Rick (and wife, Julie) Burkholder of Chambersburg and Chris (and wife, Darby) Burkholder of Shippensburg; and three great grandsons, Erick, Dylan, and Ethan. She was preceded in death by her first husband, B.J. Hixson and three brothers.

Herthal and her first husband, B.J., owned and operated the former Hixson’s Cute Curls out of their home in St. Thomas for many years. She later taught computer classes in Greencastle Antrim School District. She was a former member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Chambersburg and a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Martha Custis Chapter 342. She was also a life member of the following ladies’ auxiliaries, Marine Corps League, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 842, Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, and the Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, all in Chambersburg.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 2, 2011 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with Chaplain Ray Kauffman officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
