Hope Catherine Clever, 72, of Chambersburg, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the Chambersburg Hospital, surrounded by people who love her. She was born November 26, 1950, the daughter of the late Alfred and Jaennette Powell Walton.
Hope has lived a life of education and service to the community. She has been one of the kindest, most understanding human beings to walk the earth. While employed at Wilson College in 1984, Hope decided to take courses part-time, eventually going full-time. She graduated in 1992 with a degree in Business and Economics. Soon after, Hope became a buyer for the Frederick County Board of Education and then later for Rotz Lumber in Chambersburg. In 1997, Hope began pursuing her Master's Degree, later graduating with a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Shippensburg University in 1999. From 1998 to 2000, Hope served as Director at Rural Opportunities Migrant Head Start, and then moved on to Executive Director at the ESCAPE Parent-Child Center from 2000-2003. From 2003 to 2011, Hope worked at Chambersburg Hospital as a mental health counselor. During that time, she also served briefly as Adjunct Professor at Penn State Mont Alto and Wilson College. From 2011 to 2013, Hope served as Director of Psychological Health at Air National Guard in Middletown, PA. In June of 2014, Hope successfully defended her dissertation titled "The Experience of Interpersonal Forgiveness in Counseling." Having begun private practice in 2013, she continued that for several years; she also worked at Crisis Intervention at Chambersburg Hospital during that time. She joined Keystone Behavioral Health in 2019, retiring in 2022.
Hope enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, baking, reading about various nonfiction topics, and reading/listening to Scripture.
She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Robert V. Clever, Jr., whom she married on March 24, 1972; two daughters, Raegan Clever and Jill Howell (Chase), both of Chambersburg; three grandsons: Gage, Weston, and Ryker Howell; five siblings: her twin sister Faith Savage (Walt) of Ellicott City, MD; Martha Jones of Westerly, RI; Jack Walton of Stonington, CT, Larry Walton (Toni) of Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Robert Powell of Lusby, MD; many nieces and nephews; and best friend of 50 years, Linda Briggs (Kenny) of Chambersburg. Aside from her parents, Hope was preceded in death by her step-mother, Patsy Walton; and three siblings: Cheryl Walton, Patrick Walton, and Michael Powell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 N. Main Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Dr. Meagan M. Boozer will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the Thomas L.
