Howard Shearer

December 23, 1933 — August 8, 2017

Howard Nevin Shearer, age 83, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at his home in Fannettsburg, PA. Born on December 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Violet Fern Cornelius and Robert James Shearer.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Kay Carlin Shearer and their 6 children; H. Craig Shearer of Asheville, NC; Carmel L Shearer, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands; Caryn D Shearer (Donna Griest) of Boiling Springs, PA; Carla R Christian (Ricardo) of Chambersburg, PA; Christina R. Sommerfield (Jeffrey) of Rumford, RI; and Calvin L. N. Shearer (Holly Norris) of Chambersburg, PA. Howard was a proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren: Brooklyn Shearer, Thomas White, Haley White, Carlin Christian, Cole Christian, Noah Shearer, Olivia Shearer and Camryn Shearer.

Howard was a 1951 graduate of Metal Township High School, Fannettsburg, PA. After graduation, he was employed as a mechanic at Letterkenny Army Depot until he enlisted in the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division in 1953. He then served as a Loadmaster in the 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg, West Virginia Air National Guard until he retired in 1989 as a Senior Master Sergeant. Howard was employed as a Computer Analyst at Letterkenny Army Depot before transferring to Mechanicsburg Naval Depot where he retired in 1989. While residing in Chambersburg he was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 130, DeMolay, a past Master of the former General James Chambers Lodge 801 and member of George Washington Lodge 143. After retirement Howard and Kay moved back to Fannettsburg to his family farm and raised cattle till he retired from farming in 2015.
Howard was a friend to all and always had a fun fact to engage in conversation with anyone he encountered. He was avid supporter of any athletic event that his children, grandchildren and extended family participated in.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Thursday, August 24th from 6pm-8pm at Chambersburg Amvets Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to a church of your choice or the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA supporting the LIVESTRONG at the Y program, 570 E McKinley St, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
