Hugh W. “Woodie” Woods, Jr., 99, of Chambersburg, passed away Wednesday evening, August 31, 2022 at Promedica Healthcare Services in Chambersburg where he was a resident since July of 2008. Born in Chambersburg on April 5, 1923, he was a son of the late Hugh W. and Mary C. Gelwicks Woods. Woodie attended the former Chambersburg High School and shortly thereafter started his railroading career with the Pennsylvania Railroad as a fireman in November of 1941. He was promoted to Engineer in January of 1945, a position he held until he retired from Conrail in May of 1983 with more than 40 years of service. Woodie was married to the former Betty Lorraine Betz on May 23, 1942 in Hagerstown, MD. They were married for 69 years when Betty passed away on December 25, 2011. Woodie was an avid hunter and gardener. He loved planting and tending to his garden every year. He was a life member of the NRA, Elks Club #600, and the Chambersburg Club. He was also a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #842 and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, all in Chambersburg.
Woodie is survived by three sons, Gary L. and wife Rose; Hugh W. III and wife Margaret, and Jeffrey L., all of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Gary L., Jr. and wife Linda and Cory L. Woods of Chambersburg; one great-grandson, Jacob R. Woods of Moses Lake, WA; and two-great granddaughters, Amanda and Elizabeth. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Alfred J. Woods and Paul L. Woods.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the physician, nurses, and staff at Promedica for the excellent care extended to Woodie for 14 years.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at Norland Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Levy will officiate.
